After releasing their heaviest album just three years earlier, the Scorpions completely shifted gears with the release of Pure Instinct with an album that is dominated primarily by soft-metal and ballads. At first I was taken aback by the change but the album grew on me after only a handful of listens and became one of my favorites. I think the reason why is the incredibly clean sound that the disc features. Rudolf said that the album was recorded in a ballroom to achieve maximum intensity. I think that the strategy worked like a charm. I don’t consider this to be “selling out” as this was not the kind of rock music that was popular at the time. The band probably felt that it was simply time to try something a little different. The traditional scorpions stylings and mannerisims are still there on Pure Instinct.
